Solder & Saw week. July 8-12, 9AM-3PM camp

from 350.00

For grades 8th-11th. Spend the week learning about and using the jewelers saw and various jewelers torches to create rings, pendants, earrings, and more! (If your child would like to make things that are not jewelry, we can do that too - just ask!) Each day you will learn soldering and sawing techniques and use those skills to design and create metal work. We will build up to a final piece that showcases all of your new metalsmithing skills in one.

Day 1: Introductions, tour of The Metal Smithery and what all of the tools are used for. Use hammers and stamps to texture and learn about the properties of metal and what happens to it when it is worked. Begin using the jewelers saw to make a pendant or earrings that is sawed and textured.

Day 2: Discuss torch safety, how torches work, how soldering works, learn about annealing metal, and begin using the torches by soldering wire stacker rings and/or simple chains.

Day 3: Learn about sweat soldering and make a sweat soldered piece that is a combination of a sawed out design and a back plate. Discuss final project designs

Day 4: Group discussion about each person’s final piece designs. Redesigns, any necessary changes to the design, and come up with the steps needed to create the pieces. Begin final projects.

Day 5: Work on final projects and learn finishing techniques.

All materials are included in the camp fee which is brass, copper, and sterling silver wire and sheet, different solder, flux, and saw blades.

We have eye and ear protection for each person and The Metal Smithery has a complete exhaust system but we recommend purchasing your own N95 rated mask to wear for extra respiration protection while soldering. If you would rather purchase one from us, we will have them available for sale on the first day of camp.

Each day will include an hour for a lunch and relax break. Snack breaks are at each person’s discretion as needed. Lunch will not be provided by The Metal Smithery but we will have a fresh fruit snack available each day, as well as plenty of water for everyone. If your child needs more food than a fruit snack, please send more in with them.

The Metal Smithery is a tree nut and peanut free facility, if your child would like to bring food that has tree nuts or peanuts in them, that is fine, they will be able to eat in the cafe area down the hall or outside. Please note, this does not mean that your child will be left out or made to sit alone, we will just make sure no tree nuts or peanuts are eaten inside the studio space!

If your child has food or other allergies that may require an EpiPen, or any other potentially serious medical conditions, please notify us immediately so that we can include any precautions into the set up and be fully prepared. All medications will need clear doctor’s instructions and must be dropped off with your child at drop off and picked up with your child at pickup.

If you need to drop off before 9AM, you may do so no earlier than 8:30AM, when we arrive for the day. Please notify us beforehand if you need to drop off before 9AM. Pickup is at 3PM.

Please make sure to join us on the last day at 2:30PM for a show and tell celebration with cookies, where each camper will get to display their work for everyone to admire!

Tshirts are available for sale at a discount for campers (and their families) at $15
