Knife, custom scales, and sheath

Please note: Sunday, October 20th is from 12-6PM and October 27th is from 2-6PM.

In this 2-week, 10 hour class, you will make your own high carbon steel fixed blade knife with a custom handle and leather sheath of your own design. We will begin with a flat piece of 1084 steel, discuss and plan out our designs, and then take it to the anvil and forges to heat and hammer out the basic shape of your knives and then to the belt grinders (sanders) to finish the shape and put in the bevels. We will make handle scales out of wood, leather, or acrylic and you will have access to the laser cutter/engraver to add personalized designs and unique imagery to whatever you make. You will have the option of etching designs into the steel, adding file work designs, and/or a patina. Your leather sheath will be completed with the option of customization tools like laser engraving, stamps, tooling, dyes, and more. Keep your knife and sheath as simple or as intricate as you like! No previous experience is necessary and you will learn the knife making process from start to finish, including blacksmithing and finishing techniques. However, this is a physically challenging project that will also be hot (the metal has to get very hot) and dirty, so if you have any concerns about this, please email us at hello@metalsmithery.com to discuss.

Open to ages 15 and up.
